Five Interview Questions To Assess Emotional Intelligence!

Five questions to help you in your executive search (and one insider tip!)

Finding your next executive, CEO, CFO, manager, or leader is critical to the success of your organization. When candidates are ready for the responsibilities of an executive position they have developed more than just their technical capabilities and should also have developed a high degree of emotional intelligence. Qualified candidates prepare themselves with talking points to reinforce important company messages that contribute to building a positive culture, but they’re also able to think on their feet during an unplanned conversation topic.

When your candidate comes into the interview they are prepared and ready to answer the common questions. But what questions do you ask to you really get to know them?

Asking questions that are not directly related to their function help you to gauge how a candidate will navigate situations they are not prepared for. Why? They’ll be surprised by these not so common questions, and will demonstrate how (well) they think on their feet.

Our recruiters weigh in:

We asked our team of experienced executive recruiters, and we came up with our top five favorite questions to help you in your executive search.

  1. What is your superpower?
  2. How do you celebrate?
  3. How would your friends describe you?
  4. What are three words that describe you?
  5. Pick two people (anyone) that you would like to have over for dinner.

Executive recruiting insider tip!

Ask the executive candidate what leadership style they’re currently learning/practicing or what author/coach they’re currently enjoying. Candidates that are continually growing and evolving will be able to name one or more methodologies, books, or coaches.

There are many podcasts out there and while they’re two completely different forms of leadership, two of our executive recruiting team’s favorite podcasts they’ve enjoyed are:

  1. Disrupt Yourself by Whitney Johnson, CEO Disruption Advisors and author
  2. The Jocko Podcast by Jocko Willink, decorated retired Navy SEAL officer, author, and co-founder of Echelon Front
